Had a blast on my trip

So, I signed up for one of their whitewater rafting expeditions because my friend went last year and kept raving about it. I was a little nervous since I'd never done anything like it. But honestly, it was so much fun! The guides were super chill and made everyone feel comfortable. We learned a lot about river safety and paddling, but it never felt like a chore. The food was surprisingly good too, way better than I thought camp food would be. My only small thing was that getting my exact packing list details felt a bit buried on their site, but once I found it, everything was clear. Definitely would do another one.

Good course, slow scholarship process

I completed a 15-day wilderness backpacking course in Colorado this past summer. The instructors were excellent, really knowledgeable about Leave No Trace principles and kept everyone motivated. The gear list they provided was spot on, I didn't feel like I was missing anything crucial. My one minor critique is that the scholarship application process felt a bit drawn out; it took a few weeks longer than I expected to get a final decision after submitting all my documentation. But once that was sorted, the enrollment and pre-course communication were smooth. Overall, it was a valuable experience and I felt it was worth the investment, despite the initial wait.

Consistently reliable programs

This was my third course with Outward Bound, this time an adult wilderness course, and just like the others, it was really well-organized. I've done a mountaineering course and a canoeing expedition with them in the past, and their consistency is why I keep coming back. The instructors are always top-notch, clearly experienced and great at teaching. The pre-course information was thorough, as always, and I knew exactly what to expect. My only minor suggestion would be for slightly quicker responses to email inquiries, but it wasn't a major issue. They always deliver on their promise of a solid outdoor experience.

Solid program, good value

Did a rock climbing program. Instructors were professional and safety-focused. Gear was good. Course content was challenging but rewarding. Financial aid helped with cost. Good experience.

Great value with financial aid

I just finished a sea kayaking course in Maine, and it was incredible. I was really looking for something affordable, and Outward Bound's scholarship program made it possible. I applied for financial aid, and they were really helpful walking me through the paperwork. I got a significant scholarship that made the course fee manageable. It felt like I got a really high-quality experience for a fraction of the cost, which was exactly what I needed. Definitely felt worth every penny I did spend.

Is Outward Bound actually different from NOLS? Like, I've heard good things about both but wondering if one is better for leadership or something.

F Faith 1 month ago
I've done both! NOLS feels a bit more technical skills focused, super hardcore wilderness stuff. Outward Bound, to me, was more about personal growth and group dynamics, though you definitely learn skills too. Both are legit though, can't go wrong.

They're both non-profits and awesome, but I've always seen OB more about character and teamwork, while NOLS is a bit more about pure wilderness expedition skills. Depends what you're looking for I guess.

Thinking of sending my kid to one of the high school summer programs. What's the deal with scholarships? Is it like, a percentage off or more like, full ride stuff? Trying to figure out if it's even affordable.

S Shane 1 month ago
From what I hear, it's mostly need-based and can be pretty significant. Not really percentage codes like a retail store. People have gotten a lot of help, sometimes almost full tuition if their financial situation really called for it.

Yeah, my buddy's daughter got like $2000 off her course last summer. You gotta submit financial stuff during enrollment, but it's worth it to apply. They're big on making it accessible.
